Director’s Message

Director's MessageThe Consortium was formed out of the vision of Craig Barrett and Tom Franz of Intel, Ed Zander and Wendy Vittori of Motorola and Dr. Lattie Coor, former President of ASU. They saw the need for establishing a center of excellence in education and research covering a broad spectrum of applications in embedded systems, with a mission to undertake a high quality industry focused research program, to educate and train graduate and undergraduate students for absorption into industry, and to contribute to the success of its industrial partners through knowledge and technology transfer.

With seed funding from Intel, Motorola and ASU, operations started in 2001. Since then, the Consortium created a successful student internship program, established joint industry-university research projects, provided research support for graduate students and faculty, provided fellowships to students, reorganized and expanded the embedded systems curriculum in collaboration with its industry partners, and conducted the annual workshop on embedded systems. Matching faculty expertise with the interests of its partners, the Consortium’s research was organized into several thrust areas: robust embedded IC design, power, energy and thermal management, embedded processor architecture and CAD, software design for embedded systems, testing, fault tolerance and dependability, and mobile and networked embedded systems..

To compete successfully in today’s knowledge economy, industry needs a skilled workforce with post-baccalaureate education covering a range of topics across several engineering disciplines. To this end, we are embarking on a program encompassing education, industrial training, innovative research and entrepreneurship. Moreover, globalization is fast erasing national borders with respect to where companies find their intellectual capital. To better serve its industrial partners, the Consortium plans to expand its industrial membership and partner with other US and foreign universities to become a world-wide center for embedded computing.

I invite you to join our Consortium and take advantage of and participate in this global center for excellence in embedded systems.

Dr. Sarma Vrudhula. Director
